Ironman Review
Overall, Iron Man was really good.
Not really great…… but very very good.
By no means does this film compare to the likes of Batman Begins or Superman I, but if you want to be 'popcorn' entertained, have a laugh or two, and see some stuff explode; Iron Man is a gem.
Robert Downey Jr. stars as war profiteer turned cyber-vigilante Tony Stark, whose company has been providing weapons to the US government since WW II. When Stark is captured by a militant terrorist organization during a marketing campaign for his new 'Jericho' missiles, he is forced to use his legendary weapon making skills (did we mention he was a child prodigy?) to find a way to break out of the terrorist prison - hence the big ass Iron Man suit.
While imprisoned Stark is aghast to learn that his 'Stark Industries' weapons are the same ones being used to kill Americans by the enemy in Afghanistan. After breaking out of the terriorist jail, he returns to America to renounce the Stark legacy of building weapons - and then he constructs a way more awesome Iron Man suit.
Bureaucratic corruption and more explosions ensue, and in the end Iron Man delivers. Go and see it, its worth the $12. A thumbs up rating from Mans' Maxx and a whopping 94% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes should not be ignored.

Hmmmmmm… Batman is out of breath and has wobbly knees. I wonder what happened in there?

The Oscars are Coming! Maybe….
I found some great quotes from some of the actors nominated for Oscars this year. For a full list of nominations, please CLICK HERE. There is some question as to whether or not the actors will even attend the ceremony, as many are in full support of the Writers strike, and do not want to cross the picket line. I hope that the Producers will pony up and pay the writers. They are fully deserving of some internet revenue and are entitled to it IMO.
Some quotes:
"I think the only way there will be an Oscars is if the strike gets settled." - Scott Rudin, producer of "No Country for Old Men" and executive producer of "There Will Be Blood," both nominated for best picture Oscars.
"No, if there's a strike I will not go but I have a feeling they'll solve it. I hope they do. I'm sure my mom would like to see me on TV and so forth, but if there's a strike I'm not crossing the line." - Viggo Mortensen, nominated for best actor for "Eastern Promises."
Here are two more quotes that are not strike related:
"You put me shoulder to shoulder with a group of fine actors. I'm proud to be in their company and to have the broader recognition for the film is a lovely thing." - Daniel Day-Lewis, best actor nominee for "There Will Be Blood."
"There were a lot of candidates and a lot of the awards shows or organizations this year have had different mixes of people. It was nice to see Tommy Lee Jones in there. He hadn't been in so much of the mix and when I saw his name come up and there was only one name left to go, I thought, 'Naah, well, there's no way (I'll be nominated).' So to be honest, I was quite surprised." - Viggo Mortensen, on his best actor nomination for "Eastern Promises."

Forty Lashes…and a Teddy Bear?
Is it just us, or does it seem that the story making headlines this week of 54 year old British teacher, Gillian Gibbons, who has been imprisoned and even threatened with exectution in Sudan for allegedly allowing her class to name a teddy bear "Mohammed" seem a bit…EXTREME?!?!
In case you haven't heard, this is the scoop:
Gibbons, 54, was arrested last week after she asked her class of 7-year-olds in Khartoum to name the stuffed animal as part of a school reading project. Gibbons had sent circulars about the reading project which would include the bear out to parents — none of whom objected at the time — but later complaints resulted in Gibbons being formally charged with insulting the Prophet Mohammed. Gibbons could have faced a sentence of 40 lashes, a fine, or a jail term of up to a year for the offence, but luckily, was "only" sentenced to a 15 day imprisonment, to be followed by deportation back to the U.K. Meanwhile, the British embassy in Khartoum has been surrounded for days by several hundred angry Muslim Sudanese protesters who have been chanting religious slogans and calling for the death of Gibbons, as "punishment" for insulting the Prophet Mohammad.
Now, no one can deny the right of the religious to hold an opinion, nor to defend the honor of their beliefs. But death over a teddy bear? Seriously…though one does wonder why Gibbons would put herself in any such sitution –whether she named the bear or not — knowing as she must have, the extents to which religious fanaticism can go in certain parts of the world.

Charlie Wilson’s War debut moved up….
'Charlie Wilson's War', starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts has been moved up to be released on Friday, December 21st, instead of its original release date of Xmas day. I am excited to see this upcoming film, based on a senator during the 80's who assists Afghan rebel fighters in their defense against the Soviet Union.
Phillip Seymore Hoffman plays a rougue CIA op. Should be cool…… it is based on a novel by George Crile…..
